P90X3

Last night I sadly skipped my usual tennis doubles at TCCP because of my laptop's death and subsequent scrambling to recreate stuff.  I was at work for about 14 hours, which sucked.  I am getting a new laptop today, but that doesn't solve the need to recreate what I lost.

This morning I did P90X3 Total Synergistics, preceded by Cold Start.  I did better on this than the last time, because I was more familiar with the moves.  I'm not sure it's my favorite, but it's OK.  I burned about 95 calories.

Wintergreen Tennis Weekend

On Friday morning, a group of eight of us from my tennis teams went down to Wintergreen Resort for a weekend of tennis clinics.  We had done a trip last fall, and really had a lot of fun and learned a lot.  This past weekend was more of the same!

On Friday, we had a clinic from 1 - 4pm, so we planned to arrive at our rental house by noon.  Well, we drove into the mountains and the rain changed to pretty heavy snow!  We got a couple of inches of snow in parts of the resort.  Fortunately, the roads did not get too bad.  The Friday clinic was a good review of the double strategies we had learned last October, plus some new drills.  I love taking tennis clinics!

On Saturday, we had a clinic from 8 - 11am.  At this clinic, we did some drills involving "awkward" volleys, which are volleys were you have to reach or stretch or react very quickly.  This was excellent practice.  It helped me kind of mentally sort these volleys into categories of how I react to them, which I think is the first step for me to play them better.  In the afternoon, some of us (including me) went hiking, even though it was pretty cold out.  We hiked a nice, scenic loop around some waterfalls and up a creek.

On Sunday, we had a clinic from 8 - 10am.  A lot of this was review, which was good.  It helps to keep playing and doing it so that it becomes ingrained.  After the clinic, we drove home.

I really enjoyed the clinics again, and I think everyone else did, too.  We have a group of twelve making the trip down in May.  After that, I want to organize a trip for the fall.  That may be too much for us to get twenty to go again, but hopefully we'll have enough for a trip.

When I got back from Wintergreen yesterday, I had a 3.5 match with my team that evening.  We came so close to winning the match, which was against a very good team, but only won two courts.  Whitney and I lost 7-6, 3-6, 0-1.  In the first set, I got into some lobbing rallies with the other team, which wasn't necessarily a good thing.  But then I remembered the strategy we learned at Wintergreen for dealing with lobs, and when I pushed back my opponent, I moved forward to take the next lob out of the air.  This turned things around for us, and we got pretty aggressive at the net, with a lot of volleys and overheads.  In the second set, our opponents switched sides, which somehow enabled them to hit better groundstrokes.  We really floundered.  I wanted to try to get the balls more "up" again, like in the first set, but Whitney really wanted to rally.  I just didn't think that was working.  We lost the second set.  In the match tie-breaker, we quickly got up 4-1, but then they caught up.  We made some unforced errors, and they hit some good shots, and we ended up losing the match tie-breaker 10-8.  Sigh.  I really feel like we could've won our match, and it would have gotten an overall win, too!

This morning, I did P90X3 The Warrior, preceded by Cold Start.  This was an interesting workout, with an unusual sequence of moves, mixing cardio and bodyweight strength moves.  I burned about 175 calories.

Today before class, my laptop died, taking a bunch of work stuff with it.  I decided not to go to my tennis doubles tonight at TCCP so that I can re-make some of the stuff, but I really miss it.  Sigh.

Tempo Run

Yesterday after work, I did the next run on my training schedule, which was a tempo run.  I did it on the treadmill.  First, I ran 10 min at 5.8 mph, then I ran 25 min at 6.5 mph, and finally I ran 5 min at 5.8 mph.  This came to a distance of 4.15 mi in 40 min.  The run did not feel too bad, although my legs were definitely a little sore from the run the day before.

This morning I did P90X3 CVX, preceded by Cold Start.  This was actually a pretty tough workout.  From some reviews I'd read, I thought this was going to be easy, but it was tough.  I burned about 195 calories.

Long Run

Yesterday after work I did the long run I was supposed to do this past weekend.  I had switched my schedule a bit, since I played so much tennis on Saturday.  The run was supposed to be 8 miles, with 4 miles at an easy pace and 4 miles at "race pace".  On the treadmill, I did the first 4 miles at 5.8 mph and the second 4 miles at 6.3 mph.  The run took 1:19:30.  While I did take breaks, it didn't seem as hard as I expected for the fact that the whole thing was 8 miles.

This morning, I did P90X3 The Challenge, preceded by Cold Start.  This is a whole lot of pull-ups and push-ups.  My "number" for pull-ups was 3, which I did accomplish.  The next time, I'll try 4.  My "number" for push-ups was 15; I was trying not to go too crazy here, because I didn't want to be incredibly sore the next few days, but I was too conservative.  I should've done more.  The next time I'm going to go for 20.  I burned about 75 calories.

Monday Night Tennis

With all my matches and traveling, it's been a long time since I played in my Monday night tennis doubles.  It was good to be back.  I played pretty well!  In the first round, my partner, Jill, and I won 6-1.  In the second round, my partner, Kelly, and I won 6-5.  In the last round, my partner, Katya, and I won 3-0.  Not bad!

This morning I did P90X3 Agility X, preceded by the Cold Start.  I think this will be a good workout once I get the moves down, but this time I was mostly trying to figure out what to do.  I burned about 175 calories.  Afterward, I did some foam rolling.

P90X3

Yesterday evening I did one of the runs on my training schedule.  I'm switching the order of some of the runs, because I knew that last night I was going to be too tired for a fast run.  Instead I did a 50-min easy run.  I ran at 5.8 mph on the treadmill for 50 minutes, which came to a distance of 4.83 mi.  I took a lot of breaks on the side rails.

This morning I started P90X3.  I did Total Synergistics (starting with Cold Start), which was an OK workout.  I refuse to do the yoga pose "plow", because it kills my neck.  There were a few other moves that I couldn't do well yet.  I burned about 90 calories.

I decided to get P90X3 because the shorter workouts fit into my schedule better right now.  Also, with my tennis and running, I'm not sure I really need a longer workout.  Finally, P90X3 also has a wide variety of workout types, which seemed to be advantageous.  Since I can only do 4 workouts (plus a day of foam rolling) per week, I've extended the P90X3 schedule from 3 months to 4 months.

Lots of Tennis!

Yesterday I played about 6 hours of tennis!

First, I had an outdoor practice with my tennis team in the afternoon.  It was finally supposed to get warm and sunny, so how could we not play outside?  We played three rounds.  In the first round, my partner, Bhanu, and I lost 6-1, which was a bit unexpected.  In the second round, my partner, Viqui, and I won the first set 7-6, and then lost the part of the next set we played 2-1.  In the last round, I played singles and unexpectedly won 6-4.

In the evening, Bill and I attended a tennis social at Fairland organized by Jessica and her husband.  There was a lot of food, although I didn't really eat that much, because I can't eat a lot and then play.  We each played 5 sets with different partners.  Jessica and her husband did a good job with the organization, so the play kept going pretty smoothly, and we had pretty good pairings.  I managed to win the second-most number of games among the women, so I got second prize!  By the end of the night, I was completely wasted.  In my last set, my arm was all noodly when I was serving, so I was lucky that I managed to keep going.  It was a lot of fun!

This morning I did my usual boxing class.  I definitely took it easy, since I had played so much tennis yesterday.  It was good to be back, though.

Disney World, Days 4 and 5

On Wednesday, I got up in time for a run around the hotel grounds again.  I ran 3.04 mi in 28:23, which is an average speed of 6.4 mph.  I was pretty psyched, because this is rather faster than I usually run, and the run felt pretty good.  It was certainly a gorgeous day.

We spent most of the day at Animal Kingdom.  The safari was particularly good, with lots of animals to see; we got onto the ride at about 9:30am, so I think the animals were still pretty active.  The big rollercoaster in the park was also pretty good.  We got in lots of walking, as well.

Yesterday, I got up in time for another run.  In the first few minutes of this run, it was clear that the GPS has messed something up, as it said that I completed the first half-mile in less than 3 minutes.  Um, no.  I ran until the GPS said 3.04 mi, which was 28:15.  This was an average speed of 6.45 mph, but I really only ran about 2.8 mi.  Since this distance and time was very similar to Wednesday's run, I suspect the GPS also had a glitch on Wednesday, and didn't actually run as fast as I thought.  The glitch just wasn't as obvious of a jump as this one was.  Oh, well.

We flew back home yesterday afternoon, and then I had a match with my 3.5 team last night.  Unfortunately, we lost all the courts, which I had not expected.  My partner, Jessica, and I lost 6-3, 6-4.  We had a lot of unforced errors, but our opponents also had a lot of really good angled shots.  Oh, well.

Today is my rest day.  This morning I did my shortened version of P90X2 Recovery + Mobility.  I burned about 70 calories.

My Basis Peak really bases a lot of its calorie calculations on steps.  I did a lot of walking (and running) in Disney World, and I got some of my highest step counts and calorie counts since I've been wearing the Peak.  Maybe that's accurate, but it's hard to be sure.  I don't necessarily feel like I was more tired than many other days when I've played a lot of tennis (for example), but didn't not get as high of a step or calorie count.

Disney World, Days 2 and 3

Yesterday, I did another run on the grounds of our hotel at Disney World.  I ran 3.02 mi in 31:15, which yielded an average speed of 5.8 mph.  The run felt OK - I had a more interesting route, which was good.

After that, my mom and I went to Epcot for the day.  We were there all day, until the fireworks show at 9pm.  A lot of walking, but again it was a beautiful day.

Unfortunately, while I was there, I got an email about some problems with the internet telescopes one of my classes will be using, so at the end of the day, I spent about 3 hours fixing things in my hotel room.  I didn't get much sleep.  Because of that, I decided not to do a run this morning.  I was also feeling pretty tired otherwise.

Today we went to Animal Kingdom.  This is a pretty nice park; the safari was very good, and since we got there relatively early, there were still a lot of animals out.  We were there until late afternoon, and then came back to our hotel room for a nap.

Disney World, Day 1

My mom and I arrive at Disney World late last night.  We're staying at the Swan, which is right next to Epcot.  This morning I got up and did a run on the grounds.  I got mixed up and did not find the jogging paths, but used the general resort sidewalks.  I ran 3.03 mi in 31:37, which was an average speed of 5.75 mph.  I can definitely feel the humidity here.

We spent the day at the Magic Kingdom, criss-crossing it multiple times to get to all the rides and attractions we wanted.  Big Thunder Mountain was definitely the hit of the day.  Overall I got almost 27,000 steps for the day, which may be a high for my with my Basis Peak.

Tempo Run

Yesterday was my rest day, so I didn't do any more activity.

My Mom came to town yesterday, and we are flying out today to Disney World!  While she was here, I thought we'd go shopping for some of the new sports bras Victoria's Secret has been advertising.  Unfortunately, they didn't have the one I liked in my size.  So I came home and ordered it from their website.  Hopefully it fits.

This morning I did the next run on my training schedule, which was a tempo run.  I completed it on the treadmill so that I could control the speed, and because it was raining outside.  I did 10 min at 5.8 mph.  Then I alternated 2 x 10 min at 6.5 mph with 2 x 2 min at 5.8 mph.  Finally, I finished with 5 min at 5.8 mph.  This took 39 min and totaled 4.0 mi.

My next runs will be at Disney World!  I am planning to run for about 30 min each morning in order to get a decent calorie burn on the trip.  I really don't want to gain back the weight I've lost.

Combo Loss

Yesterday morning, I did P90X2 X2 Shoulders + Arms.  I've been pretty tired this week, so I didn't try to push the workout too much.  I increased reps on one or two moves.  I burned about 100 calories.

Last night, I had a match with my combo team.  It did not go well - we lost all three courts.  My partner, Susie, and I lost 6-4, 6-2.  One of our opponents had very low and low-bouncing groundstrokes, and my partner had a lot of trouble with them.  We just didn't play that well.  The other two courts had more competitive matches, but were still losses.  Bummer!

Today is my rest day.  This morning I did my shortened version of P90X2 Recovery + Mobility and burned about 70 calories.  Yesterday at my tennis match, I had some knee pain for no apparent reason - I wasn't even moving when it started hurting.  It went away for the match, but it is bothering me some today.  I hope it clears up quickly.

Two Runs

Yesterday after work, I had planned to go to cardio tennis at TCCP.  However, my last meeting ran way over, and so I was not going to have time to get there and change and get on the court before the class started.  So I canceled that and came home to do a short run on the treadmill.  I did the hill HIIT treadmill workout that I described here.  However, I increased the faster parts of stages 2 - 6 by 0.1 mph.  The run felt so-so.  It added up to 2.83 mi in 30 min.  I did get to watch one of my all-time favorite Stargate SG-1 episodes during the run: "Window of Opportunity"!

This morning I did my HIIT agility workout, followed by P90X2 X2 Ab Ripper.  I burned about 170 calories, which was pretty good.

This afternoon after work, I did the next run on my training schedule, which was a 45-min easy run.  I ran at 5.8 mph the whole way, for a distance of 4.35 mi.  This run felt reasonably good.  One of the things that hill-running people say is that when you practice running on inclines, it makes your other runs feel easier, which I think happened a bit today.

Big 3.5 Win!

Last night I had a 3.5 match with my team.  Our team won all of the courts!  I thought we'd win the match overall, but I wasn't expecting a sweep!  My partner, Whitney, and I won 6-2, 6-1.  We made a few unforced errors and our opponents got lucky with a few shots, or it would've been even more uneven.  We should've really crushed them, though, since they were both 3.0s.  A couple of the other courts had a bit of suspense in the outcome, but we won three of the courts pretty quickly.

This morning, I did P90X2 Chest + Back + Balance.  I did not get very much sleep last night - with the match, I didn't get to bed until almost 1am, and then I just couldn't get to sleep until at least almost 2am.  With my 6am wake-up time, I was tired this morning.  I didn't try to push the workout, but I did do a few more reps on a couple of the moves.  I burned about 115 calories.

Snowy Run

Yesterday afternoon I decided to do a short, easy run outside, because the weather was finally spring-like warm and sunny!  I thought I'd run 30 min on Rock Creek Trail.  Well, that turned out to be an adventure, because the trail was still about half snow-covered.  So the run would go from packed snow to slush to bare pavement and back again.  I didn't make very good time, since the packed snow was a little slippery, and I didn't want to run through the deepest puddles.  I will admit that once I realized my feet were going to get soaked, it did make things go more smoothly.  I ended up running 2.52 mi in 28:16, which was an average speed of 5.35 mph.  It may have been for the best for the run to be that easy, since I was still tired from my long run the day before.

This morning I did my HIIT plyo sequence that I've been doing on Monday, followed by the Oxygen ab exercises.  My legs were still feeling a little tired.  I burned about 150 calories.

Sunday, March 8, 2015

Long Run

Yesterday I did the next run on my training schedule, which was a long run of 13 miles.  I did this on my treadmill at 5.8 mph, which took 2:14:30.  The run did not feel too bad.  I think the distraction of watching the movie Strange Days definitely helped.  Good movie!  I was really tired the rest of the day, though.  And we lost an hour switching to Daylight Saving Time!

This morning I went to my Sunday morning boxing class.  I was still pretty tired, but it went OK.  The instructor did not do anything unusual, but the class really seemed to go fast.

Snow Day

Yesterday we got (another) big snowstorm, so classes were cancelled.  I had planned to do a short run on the treadmill in the afternoon, but I ended up helping my husband shovel the driveway and sidewalks instead.  It's a bit frustrating that activity trackers never get snow shoveling right - 90 minutes of shoveling, and my Basis Peak said I had burned only 100 calories.  No way!

Today is my rest day.  This morning I did my shortened version of P90X2 Recovery + Mobility.  I burned about 80 calories.

Thursday, March 5, 2015

Easy Run

Yesterday after work I did the next run on my training schedule, which was a 40-min easy run.  I ran on the treadmill at 5.8 mph the whole time.  The distance totaled 3.86 mi.  This run felt pretty good, given that I had done some hill running the day before.

This morning I did P90X2 X2 Shoulders + Arms.  I increased my reps on a few moves, and my weights on one - pretty good!  I burned about 100 calories.

Wednesday, March 4, 2015

HIIT

This morning I did my HIIT agility sequence, the same as last week.  After that, I did P90X2 X2 Ab Ripper.  For some reason, I didn't burn nearly as many calories today - about 160 calories today versus over 190 last Wednesday.  No idea why!

Combo Loss

Last night, I had a combo match with my team.  Libby and I played on #2 doubles, and we had quite a good match.  We were pretty evenly matched with our opponents, and all of us were playing very well, without many errors.  Libby and I lost the first set 6-4.  We were pretty much even the whole set until they managed to get an extra game on us to win the set.  In the second set, we really started playing well, especially Libby's net play, and we won the set 6-2.  In the match tie-breaker, we were pretty even until 6-6, when our opponents managed to get ahead and win the tie-breaker 10-7.  It was disappointing to lose, but it really was a very good match.  Our team won one of the other courts and lost one of the other courts, so unfortunately we lost the match overall.

This morning I did P90X2 Chest + Back + Balance.  I concentrated on increase my reps on pull-ups, which I managed to do.  I was pretty tired from being up late the night before with the match.  I burned about 105 calories.

After work today I did a hill HIIT run on the treadmill, based on the one I described here.  I increased the work portions of steps 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 by 0.1 mph.  The workout took 30 min and the distance came to 2.83 mi.  It was a good short workout that didn't completely waste me.

Sunday Practice

Around lunch time yesterday I had a small practice with my tennis team - we only had one court indoors.  My partner, Fran, and I lost the first match-up 7-5, 6-2.  We switched partners for the remainder of the time, and my partner, Lindsay, and I got a draw of 3-3.

We had snow, then sleet, then a bunch of freezing rain for the rest of the day, so I ended up scraping and shoveling a bunch of ice in the afternoon, which really did a number on my arms and shoulders.  Then I had to change the cat litter and vacuum/mop the house.  I was exhausted by bedtime.

This morning I did my HIIT plyo sequence, followed by the Oxygen ab exercises.  I really didn't have as much energy as usual, and it showed in my calorie burn: about 140 calories.

Sunday Boxing

Yesterday afternoon I did the next run on my training schedule, which was a tempo run.  I ran for 10 min at 5.8 mph, then did 2 x 10 min at 6.5 mph, alternating with 2 x 2 min at 5.8 mph.  Then I finished with 5 min at 5.8 mph.  This took 39:00 and totaled 4.0 mi.  This felt like a hard run, and I don't think it  was just the speed.  I think the boxing earlier in the day cooked my legs a bit.

This morning I was back to normal with my regular Sunday boxing class, albeit at an earlier time than usual.  It was good to see the instructor again, who had noticed I'd missed a few weeks.  I dogged the c lass a bit, as I was tired.
